A fresh experience of bread

Brødbanken er for alle, der har noget at dele i forbindelse med dansk brødkultur. I dette seneste indlæg fortæller Matt Wells – en 23-årig studerende fra UK – Brødbanken om sit møde med de danske rugbrødstraditioner, og hvordan han har vænnet sig til at spise det her lidt mærkværdige rugbrød under sit ophold i Danmark.

Language, humour, politics and weather, were just some of the things I speculated as being different and hard to adjust to before moving from my native England to Denmark. The reality was that many of these aspects of everyday life were not a barrier in making a smooth transition to life in Copenhagen. What I did not foresee was having to adapt my eating habits surrounding bread.

I’m lucky enough to have made friends with some fellow peers who are native Danes, who often generously offer me lunch at their home. However, quite often the only bread, or in some cases food what so ever, in their kitchen is black bread, something not readily available in the UK and would not be my first choice of bread variety. But as they say,  ‘when in Rome…  ‘ so I kindly accept their offerings. Having initially faux an expression of appreciation when eating this bread, I have now grown to tolerate its unfamiliar appearance and taste. I’m sure in time I will grow to enjoy it as much as I have the rest of my experience here.
